Under the Explorer's Hood

Three different engines are available for the SUV: Unless you are getting the Sport trim, you can expect a 3.5-liter V-6 engine that produces up to 255 lb-ft of torque and 290 horsepower. That engine will give a driver a six-speed automatic transmission, with a choice of four-wheel- or front-wheel drive. Getting four-wheel drive can give you Ford's Terrain Management System, a selectable four-mode system that applies different traction amounts for various driving conditions. A driver can power this SUV through cruise control to make it easy to stay straight on highways and similar roads without steering. Another available engine is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder unit, which you can get on an Explorer that has front-wheel drive. This engine produces up to 270 lb-ft of torque and 240 horsepower. The SUV is capable of speeding up from zero to sixty miles per hour (mph) within 9.1 seconds. An Explorer with the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine can haul up to 2,000 pounds worth of equipment behind it, and a V-6 engine-equipped can tow up to 5,000.
